TransCad is full transportation GIS software product sold by Caliper Corporation that can do travel demand forecasting. Starting with TransCAD 6.0, GTFS file format input and GTFS-based best route solutions are supported[1]. TransCAD is designed to offer easy visualization and editing of an entire transit network. TansCAD's modelling capabilities create trip generation forecasts, showing trips generated in individual zones, and zone-to-zone trip generation. This is useful for evaluating the effects of changes to the transportation network on transportation demand. The trip generation estimates might differentiate by mode.

Special GIS Features

As a GIS focused on representing transportation infrastructure, TransCAD offers some system representation that is more complicated to produce in other GIS applications.

Network

TransCAD's data structure stores data relevant to transportation systems, allowing for accessible manipulation to adjust the system in order to resolve issues. Some elements stored in the stat structure include:

  • Turn delays or restrictions
  • Overpasses, underpasses, and one-way links
  • Intersection and junction attributes
  • Intermodal or interline terminals, transfer points, and delay functions
  • Zonal centroid connectors
  • Link classifications and performance functions
  • Transit access, egress, and walk transfer links

Linear Referencing

TransCAD's method of refrencing location as distances from a point along a route help with certain types of analysis. Some features this is useful for include:

  • Facility infrastructure and operations data
  • Accident locations
  • Pavement or rail condition ratings
  • Traffic flows and transit ridership data
  • Facility alignments
  • Capital project data

Data Inputs and Outputs

TransCAD can open, import, and export a large variety of file formats to populate attribute tables and to generate maps. A full list of file types can be found here
